The RSA COFFEEHOUSE CHALLENGE of JUNE 2006 became"FULHAM WELCOMES
YOU!" on 22nd MARCH 2007

"Fulham Welcomes You!" had it's launch event on 22nd March
2007 at Nomad Book Shop on the Fulham Road.
Councillor Stephen Greenhalgh, one of our guest speakers welcomes new
comers to Fulham and says why he likes living here....

Jane Emmanuel welcomes all attendees and explains the thinking behind
the initiative and asks for
volunteers to become "Friends of Fulham" and/or to organise
future events.

Roz Denny, Fulham Food Guide and Food writer points out the foody delights
of Fulham!

Jamie Shawcross of Bridgewater's explains why he likes Fulham so much.
The story behind this event is explained below:
I am a Fellow of The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures
and Commerce - commonly known as the RSA.
It was founded in 1754 by William Shipley, a painter and social activist,
on a manifesto
"to embolden enterprise, enlarge science, refine arts, improve our
manufactures and extend our commerce".
Today the RSA's work is framed by five
manifesto challenges that reflect the original mission in 21st-century
terms.
These challenges are delivered through a portfolio of projects and a lecture
programme consisting of over 100 events every year.
It remains an independent, non-aligned, multi-disciplinary body, supported
by 25,000 Fellows and registered as a charity in England and Wales.
Coffeehouses have long been places for discussion, debate and ideas; places
where people meet and engage in conversation.
Many innovative ideas have originated from discussions in coffeehouses
the RSA is one of them.
The Coffeehouse Challenge has been developed by the RSA as a way for
people to come together over coffee to talk about the issues they care
about and maybe do something about them.
It takes place throughout June and is organised in partnership with Starbucks,
T-Mobile, TimeBank and BBC Action Network.
Starbucks provided £10,000 in awards for some of the best ideas
generated in discussion to help them get going.
However, facilitating a Coffeehouse Challenge doesnt mean having
to organise a project.
The discussion could be a catalyst for an idea or ideas which others in
the local community may wish to take forward.
The Fulham Coffeehouse Challenge facilitated by myself and
Jane Emmanuel, an executive coach , was held on Monday 19th June from
7.30 to 9.00 pm
at Starbucks, 809 Fulham Road, SW6 and our theme was Fostering
a positive sense of belonging in Fulham
12 residents of Fulham attended and a fruitful discussion ensued, coming
up with the idea of a "Welcome Pack" for new residents.
In October we were advised that we had been awarded £500 to
develop our idea further and we featured in an article in the RSA
Journal of December.
Several meetings later our ideas have evolved to a planned series of
Welcome Evenings entitled "Fulham Welcomes You!" to be held
2 to 3 times a year
at different coffee houses along the Fulham Road (between Parsons Green
Lane & Fulham Palace Road.)
On the basis of the initial evenings being a success, they will eventually
expand to other areas in Fulham.
To launch & test this idea the first event took place on 22nd March
2007 from 6:30 to 8:00PM at the Nomad book store & coffee shop on
the Fulham Road
The format of the evening was wine & nibbles with a welcome speech
from the organisers Roz Denny, Fulham Food Tour Guide and Food Writer,
Steven Thorpe, Sergeant Fulham Town Ward, Jamie Shawcross, Manager of
Bridgewater and Stephen Greenhalgh, Hammersmith & Fulham Council Leader
.
Over 20 new residents invited through local Neighbourhood Watches &
Estate Agents, joined the above, local shopkeepers and local residents
of long standing
for a warm and interactive welcome, which we hope will create a stronger
community.
Over forty gift bags for the newcomers and guests with helpful info from
the council and several other insitutions, our own list of useful websites
and
useful discount vouchers and small gifts from retailers were handed out
as people left.
We would like to thank Harriet Morton, Director of Nomad Books, Andrew
the Manager and Alida from the coffee shop for providing the setting for
the evening and lots of help and support.
