I have recently returned from a week in the Kalahari Desert in Namibia
spent with the !Gubi family a small group of San bushmen, women and children
near the Botswana border.
Some of the pictures are shown above and in a slideshow.
they are wonderful musicians and as such are supported by Indigenous
People a charity that promotes not only traditional music and dance
but also the visual arts, story-telling, documentary and feature films
from and about indigenous cultures. In addition to marketing and managing
tours of the UK and Europe by indigenous performance groups, they will
also be hosting indigenous arts spaces in festivals - combining workshops,
performances, film screenings, art exhibitions, crafts stalls and discussion
fora to celebrate and promote indigenous wisdom, knowledge and spirituality.
The concern that came out of this trip for the bushmen and their threatened
way of life has led me to Protimos
Foundation (Lawyers challenging Poverty) whichwas founded by Fiona
Darroch,
a London-based barrister specialising in Environmental Law.
Protimos provides access to justice to indigenous and marginalised communities
and is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, governed by a Board
of Directors.
Protimos assists communities in becoming articulate and effective participants
in the development of their sustainable future.
In particular they have the San
Hoodia Project where Protimos lawyers, in partnership with the San
peoples, will provide the San with vital legal protection
for their knowledge of the appetite-suppressing Hoodia plant (intellectual
property) and its unlawful exploitation, thus helping to provide a substantial
income for the most marginalised people in Southern Africa.
Please help
them anyway you can!
